New paper on cooperative coding in LSO is accepted at Plos Biology!

Very happy to announce that our work titled "Cooperative population coding facilitates efficient sound source separability by adaptation to input" has been accepted to be published in Plos Biology. We show how adaptation to input statistics on very early monaural levels (the auditory nerve) affect the spatial sensitivity of binaural brainstem neurons and human perception. Moreover, we find that under complex stimulation paradigms, the traditional trial-averaging approach for analyzing neuronal coding is insufficient. Rather, single-trial
population averages of multiple neurons need to be considered to reveal a cooperative coding strategy in the brainstem. We conclude that, contrary to canonical models of sensory encoding, the primary motive of early spatial processing is efficiency optimization of neural populations for enhanced source separability in the concurrent environment.
